Susan G. Komen for the Cure
July 31, 2009

This year, and each year since 2009, the Tin Man Race is pledging its proceeds to charities and organizations dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. Look for reminders before, during and after the race in the morning.
This year, we have established our own fund on the Susan G. Komen for the Cure website! Let’s make a good showing in the name of the Tin Man Race! Click on the image to the left to visit the fund site and donate.
There are other options for you as well. When you make your gift “In Memory of” or “In Celebration of” a loved one, the Susan G. Komen foundation can send a personalized tribute card to the person or family you are honoring. Anonymous gifts are also graciously accepted. All gifts to the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For the Cure are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
Race Update 2009
July 30, 2009
The Race is On! The course is similar (but different) to previous years, not too strenuous, not too technical, but not for wimps and cupcakes!
The 2009 TinMan Race
Start time: 7:00 am sharp!
Location: Aliso & Woods Canyons, but…
Starting Line: Canyon View Park in Aliso Viejo (Canyon Vistas Drive from Pacific Park Road)
Approximate distances: 12 mile ride and a 6 mile run (more or less)
The Course: This year’s race is going to have a very different format. We will have a True-Tin division and also a Ride-Only division.
True Tin Ride: All racers will start with a very short run around the park (less than ¼ mile). This will help spread out the field of racers. Then everyone will jump on their bikes and head down the concrete path to the bottom of Cholla Trail. Ride up Cholla, down Lynx, right on the main trail, right on Coyote (over the bridge), up Rock-It, down Mathis Canyon, right onto Dripping Cave, across Dripping Cave, left on the main trail, return to Canyon View Park, and finally, drop your bike for the run.
True Tin Run: From Canyon View Park, run down the concrete road to the main trail, stay on the main trail, right on Wood Creek Trail (Wood Creek is a great single track hiking trail), follow Wood Creek until it comes out on the main trail, turn right on the main trail, right on Coyote (over the bridge), up Rock-It, right at the top of the ridge trail, down Cholla, left on main trail, and back to the park for the finish line. Gnarly!
Ride-Only TinMan Course: Same as True-Tin Ride, except, AFTER YOU GO DOWN DRIPPING CAVE, left on main trail, up Mathis Canyon, down Rock-It, up Cholla, down Lynx, left on the main trail, and back to the park for the finish line. BASICALLY THIS GROUP HAS TWO MORE CLIMBS TO DO WHILE THE REST OF US ARE OUT POUNDING IT WITH OUR RUNNING SHOES.
This years winner will win the Tin Head. The Tin Chick will win the Lady Cup. The Spirit Award winner will receive the Tin Cup. 15 YEARS OF TIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is nice about this venue is that Canyon View Park offers a great resting place for competitors, family, and friends. Come out and relax, and cheer on your favorite Tinners!
And of course, the TinMan Party starts at the Heine residence later in the day.

Party Notes 2009
July 30, 2009
Yes, the TinMan Race is great, but the party afterward is legendary. Come and join the fun, even if you haven’t participated in the race and run and morning fun. (Of course, if you are total stranger, and you’re just surfing the web, and don’t know Roy and Holly, then you probably should ignore this entire website and have a party of your own!)
The Party: Roy and Holly Heine’s residence, 26011 Via Arboleda, San Juan Capistrano 92675
Time: 2:00pm Start
Adults only, please.
Parking: If you are parking in front of the Heine residence, please park perpendicular to the street to maximize space. It is a wide cul-de-sac. Do not park where the street is narrow; if the cul-de-sac is full, please park instead on Via Estellita.
Fun: Swim, play ping pong, feed and enjoy the horses, find a restful place in one of the gardens, dance, sing, eat, and drink. We have good music, food, and good times. It’s a Recession Tin Party, but we’ll still have the keg flowing. We welcome you to bring a bottle of wine, snacks, or a fine bottle of tequila. Our tradition is to drink only fine tequila from the TinMan Cup. Bring a friend and lets have some fun! The party starts at 2:00 pm.
If you plan to swim, bring your swim suit and a towel. Come watch your favorite college football team on the big screen, especially if it is USC, while drinking a cold beer.
No drinking and driving please! Arrange for transportation. Taxi service is only a phone call away. Let’s keep all crashes limited to the TinMan Race on the trail, please!
We hope to have either hats or t-shirts again this year. Please vote for your choice in the poll on the TinMan home page. Work in progress, so check back here on the TinMan website to order yours in advance.

(If it doesn’t work out, blame my friend, Mark…)
The Course: This year’s race is going to have a very different format. We will have a True-Tin division and also a Ride-Only division. What is especially nice about our new venue is the park offers a great resting place for competitors, photographers, family, and friends.
What to bring: Once again this year we are asking everyone who can, and who chooses, to donate money to Susan G. Komen For the Cure. Donations can be made via this link to a special TinManRace Fund on the Susan G. Komen website.
Thanks to Mark Roknich, TinMan Sponsor & 5-time TinVet, creator & keeper of the TinMan website.

Roy Tests the 2009 Course
July 30, 2009
On July 25th, I decided the my body was way overdue for some severe punishment so I did the FULL TIN. Started with a short run around the park running on the grass and using the pathway as my guide to the run. The short run is an immediate charge to the heart and will separate Tinners in the pack from one another.
The ride took me 1 hour and 15 minutes which is par for this 54 year old X-Tin Champion. I suspect the studs will do this in an hour or less. The run, which I have done on several occasions as a run-only work out (great run, and scenic), normally takes me 45 minutes with fresh legs. After the ride it took me one hour.
It got pretty hot climbing Rock-It and I did have to take a dump off the trail…but I was prepared with some TP. Total time for Tin was 2 hours and 20 minutes with transition and all included.
