Race Details 2011

August 23, 2011

Everything should be the same as last year….except the start time! We’re reverting back to the earlier start time of 7am.

So arrive early. 6:30am would be a good idea…to give you time to park, gear up, check your chain, tires, and water bottle, and get to the starting line for the green flag.

Race Details 2010

July 9, 2010

As mentioned in my blog, we’re starting at the main parking lot across from the Mormon Church. After a one-year experiment assembling over at Canyon Vistas, we’re returning to our traditional starting location, but with a newer, later, starting time: 8am, not 7am.

The TinMan Mountain Bike Race and Party 2010The Race: It’s all about fun and earning the coveted TinCup. The race starts at 8am so you should get to the parking lot no later than 7:30am. From the parking lot we will ride down the road and enter onto the main trail. Up Dripping Cave, up Mathis, down Rock-It, left on Coyote, up Cholla, down Lynx, out the main trail back to the parking lot. Drop your bike, put on your running shoes. Down the road, right onto the main trail, up Dripping Cave, right at the bottom of Mathis, over the creek, right on the main trail, and take it home.

The Rewards: Winner takes the TinCup, 2nd place Gets the TinHead, Spirit Award gets the V-Cup. We can change this if we decide to for any reason. If someone wants to make a Tissue Boy Trophy, we can award this as well. Some may elect to do the entire race. Some may do it with a teammate, some may ride only. Some may just want to come out and do a long walk. Whatever makes you happy! Come prepared with everything you need; water is the most important. We provide nothing but fun on the course…the rest is on you.

Spy Photos of 2009 TinMan – HAT!

2009 Hat for TinMan RaceNever mind all previous references to the 2009 TinMan T-Shirt! 2009 has become… the Year of the Hat…

Our spies have once again secretly obtained the design proof of the 2009 TinMan T-Shirt hat.

To quote Roy in his typically eloquent words, “We’re only ordering 30 hats this year – hats will be sold at the race, and later at the party, until they run out. Hats are $20 – cash!”

Race Update 2009

July 30, 2009

The Race is On! The course is similar (but different) to previous years, not too strenuous, not too technical, but not for wimps and cupcakes!

The 2009 TinMan Race
Start time: 7:00 am sharp!
Location: Aliso & Woods Canyons, but…
Starting Line: Canyon View Park in Aliso Viejo (Canyon Vistas Drive from Pacific Park Road)
Approximate distances: 12 mile ride and a 6 mile run (more or less)

The Course: This year’s race is going to have a very different format. We will have a True-Tin division and also a Ride-Only division.

True Tin Ride: All racers will start with a very short run around the park (less than ¼ mile). This will help spread out the field of racers. Then everyone will jump on their bikes and head down the concrete path to the bottom of Cholla Trail. Ride up Cholla, down Lynx, right on the main trail, right on Coyote (over the bridge), up Rock-It, down Mathis Canyon, right onto Dripping Cave, across Dripping Cave, left on the main trail, return to Canyon View Park, and finally, drop your bike for the run.

True Tin Run: From Canyon View Park, run down the concrete road to the main trail, stay on the main trail, right on Wood Creek Trail (Wood Creek is a great single track hiking trail), follow Wood Creek until it comes out on the main trail, turn right on the main trail, right on Coyote (over the bridge), up Rock-It, right at the top of the ridge trail, down Cholla, left on main trail, and back to the park for the finish line. Gnarly!

Ride-Only TinMan Course: Same as True-Tin Ride, except, AFTER YOU GO DOWN DRIPPING CAVE, left on main trail, up Mathis Canyon, down Rock-It, up Cholla, down Lynx, left on the main trail, and back to the park for the finish line. BASICALLY THIS GROUP HAS TWO MORE CLIMBS TO DO WHILE THE REST OF US ARE OUT POUNDING IT WITH OUR RUNNING SHOES.

This years winner will win the Tin Head. The Tin Chick will win the Lady Cup. The Spirit Award winner will receive the Tin Cup. 15 YEARS OF TIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is nice about this venue is that Canyon View Park offers a great resting place for competitors, family, and friends. Come out and relax, and cheer on your favorite Tinners!

And of course, the TinMan Party starts at the Heine residence later in the day.

Spy Photos of 2008 TinMan T-Shirt

2008 T-Shirt Design for TinManOur spies have secretly obtained the design proof of the 2008 TinMan T-Shirt, and am posting here for everyone’s benefit. It’s the best shirt yet! Click on the shirt to view the logo up-close and personal.

Roy tells me that the cost per shirt is $20, and limited to the first 72 purchasers. Racers get first chance to purchase at the end of the race…the balance of the shirts, if any remain, will be sold at the party.

To quote Roy in his typically elegant words, “no money, no shirt.”

Race Update

August 25, 2008

The Race is On! The course is similar to previous years, not too strenuous, not too technical, but not for wimps and cupcakes!

The 2008 TinMan Race
Location: Aliso & Woods Canyons
Start time: 7:00 am sharp!
Starting Line: the parking lot of the Nature Center, across the street from the Mormon Church
Approximate distances: 12 mile ride and a 6 mile run.

The Ride: from the parking lot, up “the rock”, up Dripping Cave, up Mathis Canyon, down Rock-It, Coyote Run to Main Trail to Cholla, up Cholla, down Lynx, out the Main Trail back to the parking lot.

The Run: Drop your bike, put on your sneakers, take the trail (not the road), up “the rock”, up Dripping Cave, to the intersection with the Mathis Canyon trail, turn right back to the Main Trail, and take it home.

Alternative Races: Tin is about having fun. Some may choose to find a partner, one to ride the bike and the other to run. Others entrants may choose to just do one or the other legs of the race. Join in!

Partner Relay Race: One person rides, the other runs. Race starts at 7am.

Run Only Race: Race starts at 8:30 am and is the same course as the TinMan run…approx 6 miles. Runners will organize themselves at the start. We elected the start time to coincide with a lot of the riders who will be transitioning from bike to run.

Tissue Boy and Tissue Girl: This is a 6 mile ride followed by a 3 mile run. The course will be determined for all Tissue entrants on race day.

And of course, the TinMan Party starts at the Heine residence later in the day.
